Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Comeback

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
